Where Design Meets Devotion

Soffia is the life's work of Ihsaan (Sonny) Mohideen — a master goldsmith with over 35 years of experience in the craft. Trained under some of the finest master goldsmiths of his generation, Ihsaan has spent decades perfecting the rare combination of traditional hand craftsmanship and modern precision manufacturing that defines every piece that leaves this studio.

Founded in Johannesburg, Soffia was built on a single belief: that truly meaningful jewellery cannot be mass-produced. Every ring, pendant and bracelet begins with a conversation, takes shape through hand sketches and precision CAD design, and is brought to life by Ihsaan's own hands — ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.

We commissioned custom pieces for our top 10 clients as year-end gifts. The quality was extraordinary and every recipient asked where they came from. Will definitely be doing it again.

Gemstones & Their Sacred Meaning

In Islamic tradition, gemstones carry deep spiritual significance — each one believed to carry blessings, offer protection, and reflect the qualities of the soul. At Soffia, we honour this ancient wisdom in every piece we create. When you choose a stone, you are choosing far more than colour.

Diamond gemstone

Diamond

Al-Almās · الألماس

The diamond is regarded in Islamic tradition as a stone of invincibility, clarity of mind and purity of intention. Its brilliance is said to reflect divine light — the light of truth that cannot be extinguished. Historically worn by rulers and scholars, the diamond is believed to bring courage and dispel fear, strengthening the resolve of the wearer in moments of difficulty.

Blue sapphire gemstone

Sapphire

Yāqūt Azraq · ياقوت أزرق

The blue sapphire — Yāqūt in classical Arabic texts — holds one of the highest positions among gemstones in Islamic gemology. Scholars and sufi masters wrote of its celestial connection, associating its deep blue with the heavens and divine wisdom. It is believed to bring serenity, deepen one's connection to spiritual truth, and offer protection against envy and misfortune.

Ruby gemstone

Ruby

Yāqūt Ahmar · ياقوت أحمر

The ruby — Yāqūt Ahmar, the red Yāqūt — is described in hadith literature as among the most precious of God's creations. Its fire-red colour symbolises life, vitality, and the warmth of divine love. In Islamic spiritual tradition it is associated with the heart, believed to strengthen love between spouses, ignite passion for worship, and guard against illness and harm.

Emerald gemstone

Emerald

Zumurrud · زمرد

Green — the colour of Jannah, the colour of the Prophet's ﷺ banner — is among the most beloved colours in Islam, and the emerald embodies it in its most concentrated form. The Zumurrud is believed to sharpen the intellect, ease anxiety, and bring barakah (divine blessing) into the home. It is associated with growth, renewal, and the opening of provision.

Aqeeq carnelian gemstone

Aqeeq — Carnelian

Al-ʿAqīq · العقيق

Perhaps the most revered gemstone in Islamic tradition, the Aqeeq — carnelian — is mentioned in authentic narrations as a stone beloved by the Prophet ﷺ and worn as a ring by him and his companions. It is said to bring barakah, ward off poverty, strengthen faith, and serve as a protection against evil. Wearing Aqeeq is considered a Sunnah, making it uniquely significant in Islamic jewellery.

Amethyst gemstone

Amethyst

Jamsht · جمشت

Known as Jamsht in the classical Islamic world, the amethyst's deep violet hue has long been associated with spiritual clarity, the quieting of the ego, and protection during sleep and travel. Islamic mystics and scholars wrote of its capacity to still a restless mind and bring one closer to states of contemplation and remembrance (dhikr). It is considered a stone of the seeker.

At Soffia, we believe that jewellery worn with intention carries meaning that transcends the material. We are honoured to help you choose a stone that speaks not only to your aesthetic — but to your soul.

Everything You Need to Know

From the first conversation to the finished piece — answers to the questions we hear most often.

It begins with a free consultation — in studio at 53 Crownwood Road, Ormonde, or virtually. Ihsaan listens to your vision, your budget and your timeline. From there he produces hand sketches and, where needed, a CAD rendering so you can see the piece before any metal is cut.

Once you approve the design, a deposit confirms your commission and production begins. Ihsaan crafts the piece by hand at his bench in Ormonde. When it is ready, you pay the balance and collect or receive it via insured courier.

Yes. Ihsaan is a hands-on bench goldsmith with over 35 years of craft experience. Every piece is personally fabricated by him at the Ormonde studio — not outsourced, not mass-produced. This is what distinguishes Soffia from most jewellery studios: when you commission a piece, Ihsaan himself makes it.

Absolutely. Ihsaan regularly works with client-supplied stones, including Aqeeq (carnelian), family heirlooms and gemstones sourced independently. He will assess the stone, advise on the most suitable setting style, and craft a ring or pendant that honours both the stone and its significance.

Aqeeq settings range from simple traditional bezels in silver or gold to more elaborate custom designs. The setting style and metal choice are determined together during consultation — there is no minimum stone value or complexity requirement.

The Aqeeq — carnelian — is the most revered gemstone in Islamic tradition. It is mentioned in authentic narrations as a stone beloved by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, who wore it as a ring, and his companions followed the same practice. Wearing an Aqeeq ring is considered Sunnah.

The stone is associated with barakah (divine blessing), protection, and the strengthening of faith. At Soffia, we approach each Aqeeq commission with the same care and intention the tradition calls for — understanding that this is not simply jewellery, but something worn with meaning.

Timelines vary depending on the complexity of the piece and current studio bookings. A straightforward ring or pendant typically takes 3 to 6 weeks from design approval to completion. More intricate pieces with complex settings or multiple stones may take longer.

Ihsaan provides an estimated timeline at the time of quoting, and communicates any changes promptly. If you have a specific date in mind — an anniversary, a proposal, a gift — let him know at the first consultation and he will do his best to accommodate it.

Yes — heirloom redesign is one of Soffia's most meaningful services. Inherited pieces, outdated jewellery, or sentimental items that are no longer worn can be given entirely new life while preserving the original metals and stones that carry personal history.

Ihsaan will assess the existing piece, advise on what is possible structurally, and work with you to create something new that still carries the original's significance. He is transparent about any risks identified in older metalwork before proceeding.

Yes. All initial consultations at Soffia are complimentary with no obligation to proceed. You can meet Ihsaan in studio at 53 Crownwood Road, Ormonde, or arrange a virtual consultation via WhatsApp or video call. Contact us at info@soffia.co.za or +27 82 652 9768 to schedule.

Ihsaan works primarily in 18ct gold (yellow, white and rose), platinum and sterling silver. The choice of metal is guided by the design, the stone, the intended use of the piece and your budget. He will advise on which metal suits your piece best during the consultation.

Every Soffia piece carries a lifetime craftsmanship warranty covering manufacturing defects in metalwork and stone setting failures under normal wearing conditions. Annual complimentary cleaning and inspection is also included.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, misuse, normal wear and tear, or alterations made by a third party. Full warranty terms are detailed in our Terms of Service, available in the footer of this page.
